  • Maternal Fetal Medicine High-risk Pregnancies

  • Every pregnancy deserves expert, compassionate care, but for those mothers and babies who need a higher level of specialization, The Perinatal Care Center at Littleton Adventist Hospital offers comprehensive maternal fetal medicine services specializing in high-risk pregnancies. The center is staffed by experienced OB nurses, sonographers, and physicians from the Obstetrix Medical Group of Colorado.

If your pregnancy requires more than routine prenatal care, Littleton Adventist Hospital’s Perinatal Care Center offers the resources required to give patients every medical advantage and to provide your unborn baby the best start in life. With an in-depth understanding of the medical and surgical management of high-risk pregnancies, our maternal fetal medicine team has extensive knowledge of prenatal diagnosis and treatment.

Your doctor may feel you need extra care during your pregnancy for a number of reasons, including

    • Pre-existing maternal medical condition in the mother, such as diabetes, autoimmune disease, thyroid disease, Polycystic ovary syndrome, heart or kidney disease, and more
    • Overweight or obese
    • The mother develops a condition during pregnancy, such as diabetes or preeclampsia
    • Fetal anomalies, including abnormal fetal growth or chromosomal abnormalities, such as Down Syndrome
    • The mother experiences complications during labor, including premature labor
    • Multiple gestation (twins or more)
    • Pregnancy in teens or after age 35
    • Maternal history of premature labor

Our nurses are among the area’s most experienced, averaging 20 years of service in maternity nursing. Many hold special certifications in their field and are members of professional organizations specific to obstetric and neonatal nursing.

Our team of skilled in-house, board-certified anesthesiologists is available around the clock to provide continuous pain management support throughout labor. We also offer 24-hour obstetrical physician coverage.

Services offered by the Perinatal Care Center include:

    • Prenatal Screening - Usually in the first trimester a maternal blood test is combined with an ultrasound to identify fetuses at risk for chromosome abnormality.
    • Genetic Counseling - For those with family histories of genetic disorders.
    • Management of High Risk Pregnancies - Patients with complications from a previous pregnancy may need special care and coordination with their primary OB.
    • Ultrasound - Advanced 4-D capability allows the best possible view of the fetus.
    • Amniocentesis - The most common procedure used to test for birth defects, performed after 15 weeks of pregnancy, upon signs of a potential abnormality.
    • Chorionic Villus Sampling - An alternative to amniocentesis, this procedure takes a small sample of cells from the placenta where it is attached to the wall of the uterus. It can be performed earlier in the pregnancy than amniocentesis.
    • Diabetes Education and Management - For newly diagnosed gestational or pre-existing diabetes, management is provided with nutrition counseling and daily blood sugar monitoring.
    • Management of Anticoagulation - Education and teaching of injection technique for patients and their families.

Pre-Pregnancy Consultation - May be appropriate for patients with medical or genetic history that may need to be assessed before pregnancy.
