X-ray
An X-ray machine sends individual photons through the body while a computer or film records these images. These photons are not passed through dense materials like bone, which is why bones appear white in an X-ray image, while materials in the body that contain air appear black.
Patients are asked to lay on a table while the X-ray technologist positions the machine and the patient in various positions and takes a picture. Patients may be asked to hold still for a few seconds while the image is being shot to prevent a blurry image.
Women must tell the technologist if they are pregnant or think they may be pregnant or have an IUD inserted. The risks of exposure to radiation from an X-ray are extremely low.
